Most managers are given job designations in which they have the necessary technical skills. For example, a sales manager will have sales skills and a marketing manager will have marketing skills. These managers however, find out that to get the department functioning effectively, technical skills alone are not enough. They have to have people management skills. They find that more that 75% of their job entails managing their subordinates well to ensure that they are able to assist in fulfilling the roles and functions of the department. This people management skill is a critical skill that most managers lack. For example, a good sales person when promoted due to his/her selling skills finds out that these skills cannot be used when managing a sales team. The skills required are completely different. In the first instance, it was just to sell; now, it is managing and motivating them to sell. According to Peter Drucker, the most important resource that managers manage is people. If they cannot manage this resource effectively then they are ineffective managers. |
